Before I get into my hot take about the Houston Astros gold uniforms, make sure to head to the Apollo store and get your gold merch in preparation for opening day and the ring ceremony.

Back to regularly scheduled programming. Sunday afternoon the Astros’ media team dropped the video releasing the newest addition to the gold World Series champs uniforms that the defending champs get to wear for a couple of games to open the season.

At first glance, I thought the jerseys stunk out loud, and the hats were fine. I started to do some more research and put my reading glasses on so I could see them a little bit better. I ended up coming to a conclusion.

Everything about the hat the Astros will be wearing on field for the first two games of the regular season is tremendous except for one part. The bill is throwing me off. That type of material on a fitted hat just screams that it’s not going to fit properly, or bend the way I like it.
The gold star and H, the gold New Era logo, the gold touch on the MLB logo, and the side patch are all stupendous. I love every aspect of those four details. I can’t get over the hump with the gold bill. In 2017, there was a snapback hat with the World Series trophy on it with a similar material on the bill, and it would never fit the way I wanted it to.

This is a beautiful hat. One that I would have worn constantly if the bill would have cooperated. So, that’s my gripe with the hat of the 2022 gold uniforms. Let’s move onto the jerseys.

The first time I saw them, I said aloud, “yuck.” The navy ASTROS on the front outlined in gold with the orange stripes along the buttons was really throwing me off. The sleeve patch is fine, but I’m still not a huge fan of it. The solid gold numbers is exactly what needed to happen to these jerseys to make them better.
The backs of the jerseys are incredible due to the size of the number. The jerseys have actually grown on me so much that I am incredibly tempted to buy one. I believe the consensus in the Apollo chats as well as the timeline was that the hats rule and the jerseys stink. I am firmly on the opposite side of that conversation where the jerseys absolutely rule and the hats aren’t that great. That’s my hot take about the Houston Astros gold uniforms.
