The Houston Astros are still 4.5 games back of the Texas Rangers in the AL West standings, but a series against the 26-38 Washington Nationals can help the Astros narrow the margin. The team isn’t necessarily struggling, but they have had a few series that could have bounced their way.
With Yordan Alvarez going on the IL, the Astros‘ safety cushion in the number three spot in the lineup is not there for the foreseeable future. The Astros still have plenty of bats to fill that role, but not having the best hitter in baseball in the lineup certainly hurts.

This series is a rematch of our nightmare 2019 World Series, but both teams look a bit different nowadays. The Astros have a few familiar faces in the lineup, but the pitching staff is drastically different. The Washington Nationals are essentially a brand new team after trading away star after star.
The pitching matchups will have Patrick Corbin going against Hunter Brown for Tuesday’s game. On Wednesday it’ll be Josiah Gray against Framber Valdez, and for the final game of the series it’ll be MacKenzie Gore and Cristian Javier on the bump.

This should be a good bounce back series to kick off the dog days of summer, and get the Astros closer to the top of the AL West standings.
