The sport of rugby has rapidly grown in the United States with the MLR (Major League Rugby) blowing up in popularity. Carrying the flag for Houston Rugby are the SaberCats – playing at SaberCats Stadium just 15 minutes from downtown. Perhaps it’s my own involvement with the game of rugby but I’ve been happy to see the Cats run of success in 2024.
Houston currently sits at the top of the league with an 11-1 record and a massive 123 point differential. The Cats have scored a league-high 368 points and are absolutely must-watch material for any Houston sports fans out there. If you’ve been looking to get into one of the most exciting and hard-hitting sports in existence, there is no better time than this weekend.
H-Town Night
Instead of the typical yellow and black that the Sabercats sport, Houston will rock special city edition kits this weekend – in the iconic baby blue that folks down here know and love. The Houston seasoning doesn’t stop there either. In honor of the city, select tickets for this Saturday’s match against RFC Los Angeles will be sold at $7.13.

With just three home games left in the regular season and the SaberCats at the top of the league, I highly encourage you to make it out for the match. The mix of physicality and speed on display makes fans out of anyone. Of course, having the best team in the MLR ought to help.
I know a lack of rugby knowledge can be a bit of a barrier to entry but don’t let that stop you from catching one of the best shows on turf anywhere in the country. I’ll try to whip up a little rugby knowledge blog for y’all but in the meantime, I guarantee you’ll find some diehard SaberCats supporters at match day happy to explain the game to you.
