This is not a drill! Backyard Sports just released a trailer signaling their return. The Backyard Sports games were essential to kids growing up in the late 90s and early 00’s. It all started in 1997 with the classic Backyard Baseball on PC. “Backyard” series gained popularity, with Baseball getting a sequel along with the addition of Backyard Football and the more forgotten Backyard Soccer, which is a shame because Backyard Soccer was awesome, and I’m not even a fan of the sport. Professional athletes as kids started to be featured to give it an extra twist. As the mid 2000’s approached the Backyard series would include Basketball, Hockey, and Skateboarding. As the series started to expand they changed the look. To appeal to a growing and new audience the creators switched from cartoon graphics to more modern visuals, and the characters started to grow up. The Backyard Series expanded from a PC exclusive to PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, GameCube, Gameboy and the Wii by the end of 2007. However, it’s main audience grew out of it, and the next era of kids didn’t have the same enthusiasm for it. Backyard Sports was reduced to nothing but a nostalgic memory. Pablo Sanchez would be mentioned on “Greatest Fictional Athletes” lists, and streamers would feature it on their Twitch channels. Today marks the return of a corner stone to our gaming youth. Introduced us on how to manage a team. It gave us a plethora of diverse characters, all with their own niche, and ball fields that we still remember today. I hope the kids take to it because this is a game that helped mold us. The trailer transported me back to 1998 at my family desktop computer
