OC Bobby Slowik, OL Coach Chris Strausser Out
A major topic of discussion for the entirety of the Texans’ 2024 season, offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, is now out. Texans offensive line coach Chris Strausser was also let go. There were a multitude of factors that led to Slowik’s firing, including some that were out of his control. Injuries to Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell certainly didn’t help his cause. Ultimately, the regression of the offense from 2023 to 2024, and the regression of star quarterback CJ Stroud all played into the decision to fire Bobby Slowik. It was a decision that many, including myself did not see the Texans brass making. Slowik is a young coach that despite his short tenure in Houston, has a lot promise in his future as not only an assistant coach in this league, but even maybe as a future head coach of an NFL team. With the Texans new opening at offensive coordinator, lets make a case for one of the more compelling names floating around on the rumor mill: Chip Kelly.

Chip Kelly has been around the block in his career. Most notably known in the college ranks for leading the Oregon Ducks high octane, fast paced offense for years, and later on becoming the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. He has quite the resume in both the pros and college. He recently just won a national championship with the Ohio State Buckeyes. An interesting and compelling candidate, let’s make a case for Chip Kelly as the next OC for the Houston Texans. He has plenty of experience. He and Demeco Ryans have a player coach connection from Demeco’s playing days and Chip’s coaching days in Philadelphia. Kelly brings the experience the Texans have been looking for, and he brings a creative aspect to offense that the Texans had been missing in 2024. He’s had to constantly change and tinker with his style as offense from his days at Oregon, to his days in Philadelphia, all the way on through his other stops at UCLA and Ohio State. CJ Stroud will certainly be involved in the OC search, and I think he will be on board if the Texans go this route, considering the recent successes of the quarterbacks he’s coached in Dorian Thompson Robinson at UCLA, and more recently, Will Howard at Ohio State, Texans fans should be very excited about a potential Chip Kelly hire in Houston. This offense still has a ways to go in terms of becoming a top offense in the NFL, but I believe Chip Kelly would be a great first step in making that happen.
