Making The Case For A Deebo Samuel Trade To The Texans

Opening Statement:

The Deebo Samuel trade train gained a head of steam on Friday when it was reported two teams had significant interest in trading for the 49er’s wideout. One of them, your Houston Texans. It’s no secret that the Texans desperately need bodies in the WR room. Perhaps they address that need in the draft this April. Do the Texans make a move for a veteran wide receiver for the second offseason in a row? In 2024 it was Stefon Diggs. Will it be Deebo Samuel in 2025? I will make the case for why the Texans should get a deal done to acquire Deebo Samuel.

1. WR Is A Glaring Need

We are very early on in the 2025 offseason, and obviously the Texans could add multiple wide receivers between now and the start of training camp. At this point in time, notable Texans under contract include Nico Collins, Xavier Hutchinson, Jon Metchie, and Tank Dell, who will likely miss the 2025 season. Stefon Diggs has hit the open market and he likely will not be back with Houston in 2025. That leaves the trade market and the draft. Emeka Egbuka, Matthew Golden, Jayden Higgins, and Jack Bech are just a few of the names that the Texans may be looking at in this year’s draft. The Texans should not rest their laurels on having a rookie be their WR2. Samuel has had injury issues and conduct issues in his last year as a 49er, as well as constant contract disputes with the front office. While Deebo’s production has dipped since his All- Pro season in 2021, I think he can contribute and be a dynamic piece for Nick Caley’s version of the Texans offense. The question is, with all factors considered, how much is too much to give up? I believe a 5th round pick or later would be fair compensation for what Deebo is at this point in his career. I have faith Nick Caserio will put on a negotiation masterclass and get a deal done. The knock on Deebo is that he isn’t a great red zone threat, and that is perfectly okay. The Texans can draft a Jayden Higgins who is known as a good end zone target and have multiple needs addressed in the WR room.

2. Deebo Can Be A Dynamic Tool For Caley’s Offense

A change of scenery may just be what Deebo Samuel needs. He fits the model of what Nick Caley seems to want in his players. He is a versatile player who brings a strong dose of physicality and toughness. Acquiring Deebo Samuel may change how Demeco Ryans and Nick Caserio approach the draft as well. Instead of feeling pressure to grab one of those WR’s in the first round, they may go the best player available route and wait until the later rounds to add a receiver in this draft class that is deep when it comes to pass catchers. Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley will be tasked with finding different ways to involve Deebo Samuel in the run game as well as the pass game, taking advantage of his versatility as a player. As a result, this will keep Joe Mixon just a little bit fresher in games where you may need a big run or two from him. The 2025 offseason will and should be all about improving the offense, and tailoring it to what CJ Stroud does well. Adding Deebo gives you player that can excel in the short to intermediate game. He can create mismatches in the slot, and will create more winnable opportunities for players like Nico Collins and Dalton Schultz to thrive as receiving threats. Roster wise, adding Deebo will allow Nick Caserio to really focus and hone in on allocating resources to improve the offensive line so that the Texans can field a truly tough, and punishing offense that constantly puts defenses in a bind.

Closing Statement:

In conclusion, this can be a potentially low risk high reward move for the Texans. This all of course depends on what draft compensation they give up. Contract disputes have been a recurring theme for Deebo and the 49ers, and if the Texans were to trade for him, it would be a prove it year for Deebo, much like it was for Stefon Diggs and the Texans last season. The familiarity between Deebo and Demeco is there from Ryans’ time with the 49er’s organization and that’s something that I feel a little comfort in when I think of Deebo’s conduct issues. Only time will tell if Deebo Samuel will be a future Texan, but this is what I love about the NFL offseason. The possibilities are endless when it comes to free agency, trade season, and the draft.
